Betty Kempa is the SPN member of the week due to her strong drive to help empower other women.

Betty has created a 5-step process to help corporate women leave painful jobs that drain them and transition to their dream career.

Betty’s 5-step process is designed for corporate women who suffer from a case of the “Should’s.”  They drive home after an unfulfilling day at the office telling themselves, “I should be happy in this role,” “I should follow my family/friend’s advice,” and “I should suck it up until I retire… because everyone is this miserable right?”

Betty explains, that 80% of the women who come to her are understandably afraid to take the first step.  Part of what scares them is the fear they will make the wrong career decision and the other part is that they don’t know the steps to take to get them to a career that will bring them joy.  In their hearts, they know their current job isn’t meant to be their destiny… but they feel stuck trying to figure out what is.

This is where Betty’s coaching comes into play.  First, she helps them get clarity on their vision, so they can feel good about where they are going and develop a game plan to turn that vision into a reality.  Her process is designed to help clients cut through all the “noise” that gets in the way of making tough decisions.  Ultimately, Betty helps clients evaluate the pros and cons of a situation and is trained to ask the right questions to help her clients consider a fresh perspective.

Craig Wasilchak: Above all Betty, the readers would like to understand what is your true mission here on social media?

Betty:  In the corporate world, when you are in a role where you feel stuck or unfulfilled, unfortunately, many people “suffer in silence.”

The corporate women I work with often feel afraid to speak up about a painful job (for fear of being fired.)  So, they zip their mouths shut, plaster on a smile, but inside feel alone, forced to trudge along to an unfulfilling job day after day with no light at the end of the tunnel.

Often the initial problem is that they aren’t sure what their dream career is in the first place.

With that being said, my goal on social media is to make some noise so that the people that need help but are suffering in silence and afraid to ask, know where to find me.

I do this by providing valuable free content on how to find your career passion.  My hope is that by bringing awareness to the services I offer, I am able to help one unfulfilled corporate woman at a time transition into a role that makes her excited to jump out of bed in the morning.

 Craig Wasilchak:  In addition to the serious side of your life, Do you have a fun or unique unknown Gift or Talent that you can share with everyone?

Betty Kempa:  I love running races in costumes.  This year I ran a 10K in Sacramento as Wonder Woman and a Half Marathon in Las Vegas as Elvis.

Training for half marathons is tough!  Running in costume lets me laugh at myself and have some fun.  13.1 miles is a lot easier when you are laughing your way through it and high-fiving other runners.

Craig Wasilchak: Tell me about you and your business, therefore we can get to know you better.

 Betty Kempa – My Story

 I had a bad case of the “Should’s” after college.  I did what I thought I “should” do and that was to create a successful corporate career like I watched my dad do, growing up.

I worked my tail off to bust into corporate America and climb my way up the ladder.  A decade later, I had built a successful career in corporate communications.  I had more than tripled my salary and secured numerous promotions.  But no matter how much money I made, or what my title was, something was off.  I still felt like a square peg in a round hole.  I knew I wasn’t fulfilling my dream – whatever that dream was.

At first, I ignored this feeling, trying to hold tight to what I thought was my “safe” bet.  But eventually, the combination of corporate politics, feeling emotionally drained and unappreciated, lack of work/life balance and most of all lack of purpose, shook me awake.  I wondered…. what am I working so hard for??  A small voice inside told me, “this isn’t where your story ends.”

I started examining what makes me feel most alive.  First, I read every book on the planet on how to find your passion.  Next, I took every career and self-assessment I could find.  Finally, I analyzed and synthesized my findings.

Here is where I started to see patterns that told me, “Betty, your career is in coaching.”  Ultimately, I realized I felt happiest when helping others find their passion, nail an interview, negotiate and land their dream jobs.

As a result, I immediately signed up to be certified at the most credible coach training program in the world: The Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC) endorsed by the International Coaching Federation.

I’ve combined my experience in corporate America, my coaching degree from iPEC, and a lifetime of reading and research into one effective coaching program designed to help my clients achieve their dream career so they can feel passionate about what they do, authentic in their role, and taste the freedom that comes along with being in a job you love.

 Craig Wasilchak: What are three things you did on social media in the last 60 days that made you feel good about yourself?  What are yours?

Betty Kempa:  I offered a complimentary career coaching session to a corporate executive after a layoff. Layoffs are understandably a scary time for people, but they can also be viewed as a gift that allows you to explore what really makes you tick.

  • I wrote and published an article on “5 Powerful Reasons to Go After A Career That Scares You”. I received feedback from readers such as “I received so much confidence and clarity on the decision I need to make from reading your article” to “I will literally print this out, put this on my wall, and read this often.”  That makes me feel so good to know that something I wrote is inspiring people.
  • I shared my “Free Surefire Guide on Finding Your Passion” with those who want to get started on taking the first steps towards their dream career.

Craig Wasilchak: What favorite organization or group do you belong to and why is it your favorite?

Betty Kempa:  I’m forever indebted to iPEC coaching (the gold standard of coaching) which is where I was certified.  This eight-month training program required us to go very emotionally deep, as this is what we would be doing with our clients.  For this reason, this group of coaches has formed an incredibly strong bond.

#SPN is one of the first online groups I joined and such an amazing group of people that support each other.  The beauty of what unites us is that we all have a calling to serve others.

Craig Wasilchak: What is one piece of wisdom that you received, that changed your life forever?

Betty Kempa:  The book “Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway” by Susan Jeffers and the concept that we can feel fear and STILL move forward with action.  It doesn’t need to be a signal to stop, in fact, it is likely a clue that we are growing.  Instead of focusing on the fear, focus on being brave.

Any time I knew I wanted to do something in life but felt afraid, I would bust out that book and read through my highlights.  It gave me the courage to at one point in my life, move to Costa Rica and then over a decade later to quit my corporate role and become an entrepreneur.

 Craig Wasilchak: How do you find inspiration?

Betty Kempa:  I read like a crazy woman.  One of my superpowers is reading and research.  I’m an old school so I have actual books that I highlight (not Kindle.)  I’m good at picking out important bits of information and combining into one idea.

 Craig Wasilchak: What would you say to the 12-year-old version of yourself knowing what you now know?

Betty Kempa:  Figure out what makes you tick early on… what makes your heart sing.  Then go do that.  if you have waited until later in life, that’s ok too.  It’s never too late.

 Craig Wasilchak: Quotes make us stop and think.  What is your favorite quote?

Q:  What book or podcast have you read/listened to in the last 90 days and what was your biggest takeaway from it?

Brooke Castillo’s “The Life Coach School” podcast.  She talks about the concept that if you are unhappy with the results you are getting, don’t blame it on circumstance.  It’s about how you think about the circumstance. People wonder why they feel terrible, unhappy, sad, afraid.  Brooke teaches us that you can flip how you feel by changing your thoughts. Everything, good or bad, stems from thought.  Change your thoughts, change your life.

Q:  If you could drink coffee with anyone that has ever lived but is no longer living…

  1. Q:  Who would it be? – My Aunt Colleen.  My grandparents and Aunt Colleen were in a car accident when I was 18 after another driver fell asleep behind the wheel and hit their car.  My Grandma Betty & Grandpa Paul passed away and my Aunt went into a coma.  She fought hard but also passed away.
  2. What would you talk about? – Traveling & facing your fears.
  3. Q:  Why? She always encouraged me to travel internationally when I was younger (she was a flight attendant), but as a kid, I was so scared, I never took her up on it.  I’d want to share with her now, how I faced my fears and did it anyway, backpacking through Europe, studying abroad in Spain, moving to Costa Rica, running a half marathon in Myanmar.  I’d want to share my adventures with her.

Q:  If you could drink coffee with anyone that is alive today…

  2. Q: What would you talk about over coffee?  So many of the clients I work with feel paralyzed by fear to make a change in their careers.  Brene Brown is the master on the study of courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy with books like Daring Greatly, Rising Strong, and Dare to Lead.  I’d want to pick her brain on how to leverage more of her concepts as I coach my clients through a career change.  Brene Brown could help me take my coaching to the next level.

Doyle: Social media helps me show businesses and entrepreneurs how to be better with their digital marketing and strategy, so that they can then improve how they do things with their business. Consider it like a show and tell. I’ve taught a lot over the years in real-life, and so I love to continue this with social media.

Doyle: I do enjoy photography, as I used to be a professional photographer. I also have around 40,000 photos on my iPhone.

Doyle: I’ve been in business for over 16 years. My former career was as an aerospace engineer, a commercial photographer, as well as a military pilot. After leaving the aerospace industry and getting into business after getting my MBA in 2001, I created a couple of startups from Canada, where I’m originally from. These businesses became one of the top 40 fastest growing companies in Canada, and the fastest growing in the state, and I had expanded them around the world.

Since then, I’ve created a strategic digital consultancy, that assists businesses with defining their ‘why’ online, and then helping them define and deliver their why across their entire digital ecosystem to grow their business.

Amy Martin Is The SPN Member Of The Week. 12-3-18

Amy Martin is not putting North Mankato, Minnesota on the map. It was already there. I had to check to make sure, but it’s there.

Few are probably thinking of North Mankato, Minnesota if they’re thinking about the big city and big personalities.

However, you would have a hard time finding a bigger personality than Amy Martin.

Amy works for KeyC News 12 CBS & FOX News in advertising as a senior account executive. She handles some of the biggest and best clients. Amy also does great work with social media, video creation and network marketing.

Amy knows how to make people laugh, think and she always finds the bright side of things. She has challenges in life like we all do, but she also has a strength that radiates to those around her.  She may not have the largest social media following, but she does have a super engaged one.

What are the three thing you did on social media in the last 30 days that made you feel proud of yourself?

Answer: I do lot of things on social media every day to have fun and make people laugh. I also have been doing things to help Azariah and Aaron King get their nonprofit fundraising going recently.

Really proud of what we are doing to help Racheal Blaze.It’s nice that we can earn a living and also help people through social media. Racheal is getting close to her the amount she needs to raise due to her GoFundMe campaign.

I really enjoy engaging with my connections and getting positive responses such as, “Thank you for the inspiring post it was a great way to start my day.”

Life can be rough and we all have our days when it seems to be too much. I am a bacon fan, so I share a lot of posts about bacon. Bacon makes things better is my unofficial motto.

I have a lot of friends that love bacon and  I also have a lot of vegan friends. It’s a fun daily debate we carry on that makes me proud, because it brings vegans and bacon lovers together.

Laughing is something that always makes people feel better, so I’m proud every time I get someone to giggle.

Top 6 Social media friends that have helped you grow the most on social media?

Answer:  Sam Hurley is someone that I was lucky enough to engage with almost 3 years ago. He kept popping up on my social media sites and it was very apparent he was on a mission.

Sam is the reason why I began to work on my own personal brand on social media. His taking the time to engage and answer questions is something that really made me think. He gives so much of himself that it inspires me to help people more too.

Mike O’Connor, the guy with the crazy cool hair who just won’t let me give up.

Russ Johns, always a good word from him, positive attitude and wants people to succeed.

Jill Sullivan who I feel like I have known forever. She is a true leader that shares my love of bacon and cooking videos. We have had so many good laughs.

Ron Hunter is one of the best friends anyone could have and has been behind me one hundred percent. He also enjoys making cooking videos with me to share with our connections.

Ted Ladzinski a connection I have been able to work with and connect with his outstanding team at Motor City Spindle Repair.

What is one piece of wisdom you have received that changed your life forever?

Answer: I came into this world kicking and screaming on July 10th 1975.  As my dad will tell you, I wasn’t much for sleep and that is still true today. I’m told it was like I thought I would miss something.

However, as the years go by and I look back I remember my father’s words:  “Aim, Rome was not built in a day, slow down.”  I know these words to be true. I think about those words often due to the way they calm me.

How do you find inspiration?

Answer:  I find a lot of inspiration through others.  Those of you who share you stories of hardship and have found a way through. The people that believe never give up or change no matter what they’re dealing with inspire me. So many people go on when it doesn’t look like they could take another step.

People with stories over perseverance inspire me to keep moving forward regardless of the obstacles in my way.

What would you say to the 12 year old version of yourself knowing what you know now?

Answer:  Believe that all things are possible.  If someone tells you that your dream is not possible use that as a reason to achieve your dream even more.

Craig Wasilchak: Above all Terry, the readers would like to understand what is your true mission here on social media?

Terry Bean: My social media mission is 3 fold.
1. Social media improves my ability to help others due to how easy it is to connect. You can connect with more people faster online and do so without geographic limitations. Connecting online is a great way to figure out which people you should develop deeper relationships with.
2. Social Media is also a great way to extend my personal and professional brand. I use social media, so people have an easier time finding me through the content I share. Effective social media use also helps you stay relevant and remain in front of your audience.
3. Learning through the platforms is a great way to learn. You can connect with or follow experts, your competitors and anyone else who can help you grow.

Craig Wasilchak: In addition to the serious side of you life, Do you have a fun or unique unknown gift or talent that you can share with everyone?

Terry Bean: I can listen to anyone talk about anything for like 5 minutes straight without interrupting them.

Craig Wasilchak: Tell me about you and your business, therefore we can get to know you better.

Terry Bean: is a publishing company. We focus on creating and co-producing shows, events, podcasts, concerts and other pieces of content that people find interesting.

We do this to provide the brands we work with new ways to reach their target customers through sponsorship and other strategic relationships.
We also network with influencers and consult with SMBs (small-medium business) to help them succeed.

Network with Terry Bean

Terry has always been a people person. He also understood the value of having a strong network early on in life.  This was due to his strong observation and listening skills that he is now known for.

Networking was also an important part of his job as a headhunter in the beginning of his career. His natural networking skills became some of his best professional tools, so he hones them.

Terry made the decision to return home to Detroit in 2000 and began building his current network. It turns out that was one of the best decisions in his life.

He was making new connections like crazy by engaging a lot online and at community events. His drive and activity led to him starting Motor City Connect in 2006.

Motor City Connect is one of the first networking groups to have live events and a social network website. It wasn’t long before Terry began producing TEDx conferences. Terry’s conferences are also among the long-running and largest TEDx has had.

His activism and work even led to award from President Obama, so this is interview is an honor for me.

Terry Bean – the personal side

I love spending time on the water and have been an avid water skier since I was 12. My love for paddle-boarding took over the last 5 years or so. I’ve been paddle-boarding over 100 times during the last 6 months.

My wife and I have a soon to be 16 year old daughter who will likely have a driver’s license in December. I’m really open to any advice on this topic. I also LOVE the Simpson’s, working out and learning from my own actions and processes.

Terry Bean – An entrepreneur at heart

I know some folks who are lifelong entrepreneurs. You know the folks who were delivering newspapers at 11 or shoveling snow at 9. I’m not that.

In my heart I’m most akin to a teacher, but didn’t like the income restrictions. This led me to taking a sales job early on before I got into recruiting. It was recruiting that lead me to develop my knowledge of networking. My time in recruiting also led me to write a book and speaking engagements.

I was able to introduce two international real estate professionals that never would have met the other day, so that was awesome.

Craig Wasilchak: My readers want to know who are the TOP 6 Social Media friends that have helped you grow the most on social media?

Terry Bean:

  1.  Janet E. Johnson and I do a podcast together and continually cross-promote each other.
  2. Charlie Wollborg was the 1st to tell me about Twitter in 2007, curates TEDxDetroit and is still one of my social media idols today.
  3. Brenda Meller continually pushes me to up my LinkedIn game.
  4. Keith Stonehouse has invited me to speak at his events a bunch and then promotes me online numerous times. His exquisite use of Facebook still inspires me.
  5. Frank Agin originally taught me about networking 20+ years ago and social media is the fastest most productive way to network I know.
  6. Boyd Rudy is one of the best social media for business users I know. He sells homes and owes a lot his success to how well they market online.

Craig Wasilchak: What favorite organization or group do you belong to and why is it your favorite?

Terry Bean: Motor City Connect– While I’m  biased, I often hear from networking novices and pros alike that it is a very enjoyable networking experience.

Craig Wasilchak: What is one piece of wisdom that you received, that changed your life forever?
Terry Bean: My father told me a piece of business advice early on. He would say, “Run to your customers with bad news and walk to them with good news.” This was profound to me and applies to all aspects of life.

Craig Wasilchak: How do you find inspiration?

Terry Bean: The only way you can. By getting quiet enough to hear it. Seriously, I find inspiration frequently because I learned how to let it flow through me. It’s a combination of meditation and consistently seeking to be inspired. Curiosity and asking questions goes a long ways toward finding what inspires me.

Craig Wasilchak: What would you say to the 12-year-old version of yourself knowing what you now know?

Terry Bean: I read the book “Don’t sweat the small stuff…and it’s all small stuff” when I was 16 or 17. That was a lesson that has been instrumental in my life. I’ve long said that the book “The 4 Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz should be required 6th-grade reading. Maybe I’d want a younger me to know these lessons too.

Craig Wasilchak: Quotes make us stop and think. What is your favorite quote?

Terry Bean: I’ve long said: “I’ve never learned anything new with my mouth open”.
Another one I really like is: “The people who try and bring you down are already below you” – not sure who said it…I first heard it on a Lauren Sanderson song called Dear Universe.

1. What book or podcast have you read/listened to in the last 90 days and what was your biggest takeaway from it?

Terry Bean: I’ve been listening to Joe Rogan Experience like a fiend ever since Elon Musk smoked weed on the show. The biggest takeaway is to be more like Joe: Far more observant and shut your mouth when others speak. If you really want to expand your mind listen to his recent episode with Eric Weinstein. It is awesome.

2. If you could drink coffee with anyone that has ever lived but is no longer living…
a. Who would it be? My dad
b. What would you talk about? Current events in my personal and business life and more importantly what happens after death.
c. Why? Because he has a most awesome way of “seeing all the angles” and being able to provide clarity.

3. If you could drink coffee with anyone that is alive today…
a. Who would that be? Joe Rogan
b. What would you talk about over coffee? Human interactions, devil’s lettuce, the power of fun, why it’s important to satisfy your needs for a fulfilled life and whatever else he wanted to discuss.

4. Who is your typical client?

Who we work with and who pays us is a bit different. As I mentioned earlier, we leverage published content to help brands reach their target clients. These brands are usually B2C (business to consumer) and looking to gain market share on the number 1 or 2 companies in their industry.

The other folks I LOVE to connect with our influencers and content creators. We end up paying them so they like us even more.

Jake Melton is the SPN member of the day due to his being all about helping other people. His goal is to help other people take action and live the life they really want to live.  He does this by showing them how to cut the crap in their life that holds them back.

Jake is working to help people cut the crap out of their life, so they can focus on what really matters. He also knows that the more one can focus on their goals the greater their chance of success. Craig Wasilchak: Above all Jake, the readers would like to understand what is your true mission here on social media?

Jake Melton: Above all, my mission is to help others through leading by example. Every speaking engagement and opportunity to help someone also helps me. It helps me move my career along, but it also helps me perhaps help someone else understand they can do it too. That is why I push so hard with sharing my struggles, journey and success. It takes belief in yourself, determination and also a little help from your peers.

Therefore, I’m an open networker on LinkedIn and now SPN. Networking through social media can be so life changing it’s incredible. I just want to help others turn it around like have.

Craig Wasilchak:  In addition to the serious side of you life, Do you have a fun or unique unknown Gift or Talent that you can share with everyone?

Jake Melton: In addition to acting and improv. My unique gifts are voice impressions, sound effects. My voice impressions include Jack Sparrow, Yoda, Darth Vader, R2D2, Mickey Mouse, Scooby-Doo, Aaron Neville, Movie preview guy, door shutting, ambulance siren, helicopter, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Bing Crosby, Droopy the dog, and many more!

Jake Melton: As a speaker, author, coach, and owner of The J.B. Melton Group LLC, I speak and coach on mental health, wellness and the profound effects it has on organizational and personal development.

I also engage with CEO’s and businesses who want to focus on growth by identifying and letting go of crap that holds them back. It includes improving their employee retention and production by tackling mental health and wellness challenges that distracting them from added success and happiness.

Jake Melton – the personal side

As a young man, I had dreams of becoming an NBA basketball player, but I eventually realized it was not the thing for me. I had been an actor and took it up full-time in high school. Towards the end of high school in preparing for college, I wanted to become a public speaker. I had a knack for it and excelled in it. I loved being in front of audiences and inspiring on a larger scale. I’ve always belonged up on stage.

At 16, I was diagnosed with Tourette’s Syndrome, motor tics, and I feared never being able to get in front of audiences without the judgment or embarrassment. I never thought I’d get married (I thought who would want to marry me, right?), and didn’t think I’d ever excelled in academia or obtain higher education because of my poor attention span, focusing ability, etc.

Moving forward about a decade, I found a beautiful woman who loved me for me. Obviously, I married her and we now have two beautiful children. I obtained a BA in strategic communications and an MA in organizational psychology. Amazingly enough, I had overcome two of the biggest feats I thought I would never be able to achieve.

Jake Melton – An entrepreneur at heart

Unfortunately, I was unsatisfied working in the corporate world. I never liked the control, I had terrible luck with some of the companies I chose to work for. I was an entrepreneur at heart and working for someone else just wasn’t what I was programmed to do.

With my organizational development and human behavior background, there were a lot of things I realized companies needed help with and I couldn’t do it when I was limited working in a specific role for someone else’s company.

January 2018, my family and I had just moved to Texas after I took a job that lasted only 3 months before they told me they couldn’t afford my position. We had moved into a place a week before this and we had no furniture, no fridge, nothing. Our families were across the country and we didn’t know hardly anyone in the state.

My wife took a leap of faith for me and told me to start my own business. I listened and jumped on the support she offered. So, I overcame my third fear and started my own speaking and coaching business. Here I am today. Proud of my family, proud of my education, and proud of my work.

Craig Wasilchak: What favorite organization or group do you belong to and why is it your favorite.

Jake Melton: I am a part of the Tourette Association of America. I have had Tourette’s Syndrome my entire life and couldn’t think of a cause I’m more passionate about supporting than being able to help people overcome challenges that I’ve been able to overcome.

Craig Wasilchak: What is one piece of wisdom that you received, that changed your life forever?

Jake Melton: My mom has always taught me that life is hard, but it’s worth it. She’s my hero.

Craig Wasilchak: How do you find inspiration?

Jake Melton: In prayer, music, meditation, poetry, movies, and podcasts. In the shower, in my car, out in nature.

Craig Wasilchak: What would you say to the 12-year-old version of yourself knowing what you now know?

Jake Melton: Stop wishing your life away. Cherish it ALL.

Craig Wasilchak: What book or podcast have you read/listened to in the last 90 days and what was your biggest takeaway from it?

Jake Melton: I reread one of my favorite books of all time, “The ONE Thing” by Gary Keller. This book has drastically changed me like and gave me a fresh perspective of life and what I’m doing on an everyday basis. It uses some of the concepts of productivity that I use but truly focuses on the science behind our focus and productivity.

Craig Wasilchak: If you could drink coffee with anyone that has ever lived but is no longer living…

  1. Who would it be? Dean Martin
  2. What would you talk about? His life experiences, what it was like singing with the Rat Pack, and ask him questions about all the celebrities during his career.
  3. Why? He is my favorite singer and celebrity of all time—even named my son after him!

Who would that be? Justin Furstenfeld, my favorite musician and artist.

What would you talk about over coffee? I’d talk to him about his journey, mental health past, music, family, and get advice about overcoming weakness.
